Navigating Teguar's Upgraded COM Port Integration

Teguar has had a recent update to its TP-5645, TP-5945, and TB-5945 series, aimed at streamlining connectivity without compromising functionality. In response to evolving user needs, we have replaced the second COM port in these newer units with two USB ports, offering improved versatility and convenience.

The updated configuration now boasts a single COM port with 5 pins, which may appear unconventional. However, this change has numerous benefits. First, with the addition of two USB ports, users enjoy expanded peripheral connectivity options, aligning with modern usage trends favoring USB interfaces for faster data transfer rates.

We recognize the importance of compatibility with existing setups. Each unit includes a specialized Y cable to seamlessly integrate legacy COM needs while safeguarding the device from potential damage.

For users requiring full traditional COM port functionality, we offer the option to expand with an additional purchase. An expansion card seamlessly integrates with the unit, providing two standard COM ports without compromising the benefits of added USB connectivity.

To clarify the specifications of the new COM port, please refer to the following table:

The revised COM port in Teguar’s TP-5645, TP-5945, and TB-5945 series is designed to offer flexibility and compatibility in various industrial and commercial applications. Unlike traditional COM ports, which typically have a single set of pins dedicated to specific functions, the new COM port adopts a split configuration.

Here’s how it works:

  • Pin Configuration: The COM port consists of 5 pins, each serving a specific purpose. These pins are shared between COM 1 (RS232) and COM 2 (RS232/RS422/RS485), offering versatility in communication protocols.
  • COM 1 (RS232): This segment of the COM port functions as a standard RS232 COM port, featuring pins for transmitting (TX), receiving (RX), request-to-send (RTS), clear-to-send (CTS), and ground (GND). Users can select between RTS, 5V, or 12V functionality using a jumper, providing compatibility with various devices and applications.
  • COM 2 (RS232/RS422/RS485): The remaining pins of the COM port are dedicated to COM 2, which supports multiple communication protocols, including RS232, RS422, and RS485. This versatility allows users to connect a wide range of devices, from legacy equipment requiring RS232 to more advanced systems utilizing RS422 or RS485.
  • Y Cable Integration: To accommodate the split configuration and ensure seamless compatibility with existing setups, Teguar provides a specialized Y cable with each unit. This cable allows users to connect their current COM devices while safeguarding the device from potential damage. By utilizing the Y cable, users can effectively manage both COM 1 and COM 2 functionalities without compromising performance.
  • Expansion Options: For users requiring additional COM ports or specific communication protocols, Teguar offers the option to expand the system with an additional purchase. An expansion card can be seamlessly integrated with the unit, providing two standard COM ports while retaining the benefits of the added USB connectivity.

The new COM port configuration offers enhanced versatility and adaptability, catering to a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. Whether users require compatibility with legacy devices or seek to integrate modern communication protocols, Teguar’s innovative approach ensures seamless connectivity and reliable performance. If you have any questions about your COM port in your TP-4845, TP-5645, or TP-5945 unit, feel free to reach out to our support team.
