15 Examples of Embedded Computers and their Real World Uses
Embedded computers are computers typically designed to do one task over and over again, for a long period of time. This differs from a personal or consumer computer, which is designed to perform multiple tasks such as web browsing, using creative software, games, and more. Because embedded computers are built for a specific task, they are efficiently designed with minimal components. By building in only what’s needed, embedded computers are usually smaller, more affordable, and more reliable than their more multi-functional personal counterparts.
Embedded computers are commonly associated with box PCs, which are computers without a display, but an embedded computer can refer to either a panel PC or a box PC. Not to be confused with an embedded system, which can come in many different forms.
In this collection, we’ll highlight 15 examples of embedded pcs we sell here at Teguar, as well as some of the real- world applications they’re suited for.
Embedded Computers Examples
Rugged Embedded Computers
In demanding environments, consumer PCs off the mass market can’t guarantee durability or a long life. Ruggedized computers, on the other hand, are designed to endure years of use in factories and other industrial settings. This durability comes from cast aluminum and stainless steel builds, finned heatsinks for passive fanless cooling, and IP ratings to resist dust, moisture, and particle ingress.

Panel PCs
For an all-in-one computer solution, look for an embedded computer with its own integrated display. A panel PC is just that: a rugged touch display with an attached embedded box PC on the back. Panel PCs are built to mount seamlessly into a cutout to be flush with the wall, making for an efficient, space-saving design. Some panels have a modular design, allowing users to swap out the box or the display without needing to replace both parts in the event of an upgrade or repair.
Perfect for: Operator HMI; Customer-facing Kiosk
Waterproof Embedded PCs
With IP ratings from IP65 to IP69K, waterproof embedded box pcs are built for tough environments where high-pressure jets or strong chemicals are used for cleaning. They’re fully sealed dustproof and waterproof PCs, built with SUS304 or SUS316L stainless steel. Whether it’s liquid spray, high temperature jets, or even full submersion, check the IP rating you need for the application you’ve got and rely on these rugged PCs to last and last.
Perfect for: Cleanrooms; Food, Beverage, & Bottling Facilities
Medical Embedded Computers
What makes a computer a medical computer? For starters, complex medical software and loads of data to process demand a high computing power, such as a 13th Gen Processor from Intel®. Even more critical than power, however, is strict adherence to medical and safety standards. Teguar’s medical computers come certified or compliant with the latest 60601 medical certifications and are made from antimicrobial materials that inhibit bacteria growth and hold up to repeated sterilization.
Perfect for: Hospitals; Medical Research
Edge Computers
Edge computing moves data processing out of the cloud and closer to where the data is actually captured. In a home security system, a smart factory, and any application with a network of connected devices, there’s loads of data that need to be processed. If you try to send it all to the cloud, your network connection will slow down considerably. Instead, you can process some of that data locally, on an industrial computer in the same building. These computers should be compact, long-lasting, and fast.
Perfect for: AI Endpoint; Security or Facility System Management
